Many people still make the mistake of using a bank cash point machines abroad. Let’s say you withdrew £1,000 from a cash point abroad with a major high street bank credit card. You would pay a 2.75% foreign loading fee and a 2% withdrawal fee. In addition, your interest rate would be 19.5% – and there’s no interest-free period. So you would pay a total of £47.50 in charges! Ouch! No wonder banks love you to do this.
Another common mistake is to exchange your holiday currency at the airport. Airports charge a lot of money for retail space; the exchanging kiosk has to reflect this in their currency rates and you get less for you money. Often you get charged a commission just for the privilege of exchanging your holiday money as well as a poor market rate.
